Q

Who was the first philosopher who advocated individualism?

#12132 Maybe Aristotle. See *The World of Parmenides* by Popper.

Apparently promoting individualism is a Jewish plot

For the podcast advocating reading books, I think I forgot to say it's also important to *stop* reading books. If it's not working for you, don't finish it. Don't commit to reading a whole book just because you read chapter 1 or just because you got the book. It's also good (for non-fiction) to sometimes read specific chapters of interest rather than reading everything in order. Read the best (for you) parts and, if they impress you, then read some more parts. Sometimes just skipping the prolog helps. Some prologs are really optional stuff about writing the book rather than an introduction or outline of the topic. Also whenever there is an introduction written by a different person it's safe to skip it. So I often just start at chapter 1 and find that's better.

Some books won't work well. Try other books instead of forcing yourself to read on.

If you are giving up on 90% of books after 5 pages, then you have a problem to address. But if you read everything straight through, that's also probably a problem.

Sometimes the prologue would be interesting to read *last*. After I read the book, now I'll understand it and care. Sometimes I think they should have put it at the end of the book, not the start. The acknowledgments should go at the end too (and in some books they do, btw).

Error in podcast?

When trying to play any episode of the FI podcast through the iPhone podcast app I get an error message:

"Episode Unavailable

This episode is temporarily unavailable from 'Fallible Ideas Podcast'."

Not sure why this is happening. It was strange - it worked for a few hours after the new recent episodes were released - but now it doesn't again.

Anyone else have the same problem?

I think it's related to Cloudflare's DDOS protection.

It'll work if you listen in a web browser or download it from my website.

I will try to fix this soon.

I have disabled Cloudflare's DDOS protection, so the podcast should hopefully work correctly again now.

I have set up some firewall rules with Cloudflare and nginx which are, at least currently, adequately blocking the attack.

How People Act – Podcast Notes

These are the notes I wrote before recording the podcast.

https://curi.us/podcast/how-people-act

---

People mostly do normal things. Things they’re used to. Things lots of other people do.

They often consciously want, and plan, to do other things. Then they never seem to get around to it, forget, prioritize other stuff ahead of it, etc.

They broadly don’t want to discuss how they spend their time or what they prioritize above philosophy.

Example: Goal and time tracking. Write down your goals and say their priorities. Write down how you spend your time. Categorize time spent by goal. Compare percentages of time on goals to their priorities.

It’s not really that people don’t have time. They’ll read (without discussion) a lot if they are a person who reads. They’ll listen to podcasts and watch videos if they’re a youtube fan. They’ll watch live streams if they are a Twitch user. They’ll try to debate without using sources, and all in one go instead of async, if they’re a debater.

I made some negative comments about people who try to get me to answer their questions instead of asking the community – they are mostly asking questions which other people could give good answers to, too.

A further thought, which I think is key: don't do it *covertly*. Don't ask questions when you think I'm not AFK to get to get answers from me in a *sneaky* way. If you want an answer from me personally and individually, say so and *say why*, give a reason. If you have a reason and you're upfront about it, that's fine – I'll consider the reason and I may agree or disagree.

More broadly, it's better and easier for me if people communicate async in ways that I can easily respond to on my schedule. Use the FI Google Group and the curi.us website more please. FYI I am continuing my efforts to be less responsive anywhere else and ignore more stuff... (it's a gradual process, I don't wanna just stop everything cold turkey, there's value in some stuff and I have reasons to sometimes meet people halfway, but I'm being more selective).

The descript podcast app looks potentially good. They have automatic transcription (and human-aided for more money) and then they have features like this: *you can edit the transcript and they app will edit the audio*. So you delete a few lines and it cuts out that audio.

And sonix looks similar plus handles video too.

Social people are sometimes especially alone. What's it like to be in a room of people but you feel like you can't talk to anyone honestly, you can't open up, you just have to put on a smile and fit in with the group? Lots of people are like that all the time. They have a ton of friends but no good friends they can actually talk to. They are around people all the time but without feeling like anyone actually understands them or they've really connected with anyone.

re poly at age 50 i didn’t go into specifics. some are: kids, retirement planning, buying houses. this stuff is different and harder to organize with 3+ ppl than doing poly stuff at age 20.

therapist is harder the more unconventional you are. you need therapist who is OK with ur stuff. e.g. you don’t want to be homeschooling and use a therapist who blames your problems on homeschooling.
